The Learning Island is a 22 m² open-air educational space designed for flexible, climate-resilient use at the LLZ. The main area supports a variety of teaching and learning formats through mobile furniture and adaptable zoning. A smaller retreat zone offers seating and greenery for quiet focus and reflection.
Partially covered and surrounded by plant life, the structure creates a breathable microclimate while encouraging communal learning and individual pause. The design challenges traditional boundaries of the classroom—responding instead to the rhythms of weather, the urgency of climate, and the freedom of thought.
We refuse to learn in spaces that ignore the future.
The climate is no longer a backdrop—it is the lesson.
Education must leave the walls behind.
Knowledge must flow with air, light, and rain.
Structures must not just stand—they must adapt.
We design not for comfort, but for resilience.
Not for permanence, but for response.
We use what grows back. We build what gives back.
Learning belongs to the commons.
Shade is a right. Air is a resource.
The campus must breathe with its time.
This is not decoration.
This is declaration.
